PURPOSE:
Aurora Downtown is requesting a Certificate of Appropriateness to paint an Art Nouveau quilt mural on the on the east elevation facing the parking lot at 210 E. Galena Boulevard.

BACKGROUND:
Aurora Downtown is requesting to paint a mural on the east elevation facing the parking lot. The wall is painted brick and will be cleaned, repaired, painted with the mural, and coated with an anti-graffiti sealant. The mural with be approximately 15 feet by 30 feet. The mural is blue with green, purple, and gold accents. The design is an Art Nouveau quilt design that is meant to reflect the many different people and cultures that make-up Aurora. Symbols in the mural are meant to reflect the Mayan, the new pedestrian bridge, Keystone building, Mastadons, Northgate star, and Paramount. The artists are Laura Lynne and Catalina Diaz, who are both local artists that have done work in Aurora including the temporary plywood Black Lives Matter murals. The owner has an agreement with Aurora Downtown, who will install and maintain the mural.

DISCUSSION:
The mural has been reviewed by the City Public Art Director and approved by the Aurora Public Art Commission. This recommendation goes to the FoxWalk Design Review Committee for recommendation, and finally to the Building, Zoning, and Economic Development Committee for a final decision.

POLICIES AND GUIDELINES:
The recommendation is based on Section 8.4 "Murals" of the FoxWalk Overlay District
Design Guidelines adopted on June 28, 2016.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
The Design Review Committee recommended APPROVAL of a Certificate of Appropriateness to install a mural on the east elevation at 210 E. Galena Boulevard.
