DATE: April 23, 2020
SUBJECT:
A Resolution Authorizing the Sale of Obsolete and Surplus Property
PURPOSE:
To effectively and efficiently sell various vehicles and equipment through auction.
BACKGROUND:
The City of Aurora has sold City vehicles and equipment through public auctions for more than twenty years. Prior to sale, Equipment Services Division removes all City decals, insurance cards or other identification. Police vehicles are restored to a single color paint scheme and all law enforcement lighting and equipment is removed.
DISCUSSION:
I have projected that in 2020, following trade-ins and salvages, the City will have approximately twenty(20) used surplus vehicles remaining to sell.
JJ Kane has been used for many years and their auctions are conducted quarterly at the Beloit, WI location. JJ Kane broadcasts the auction on the internet and does not charge the seller any fees other than the hiking (transportation charge) of the vehicles to their auction yard.
In order to provide temporary additional vehicles for City divisions that employ seasonal staff, some of the vehicles that are scheduled to be sold will not be auctioned until later in the year.
A list of proposed vehicles to be sold through auction is attached.
The proceeds from the sale of vehicles are recorded as revenue in account 101-0000-392.01-00
IMPACT STATEMENT:
N/A
RECOMMENDATIONS:
I recommend that the City Council adopts a resolution authorizing the sale of City of Aurora's obsolete and surplus property using JJ Kane Auctioneers and America's Auto Auction.
