WHEREAS, the City of Aurora has a population of more than 25,000 persons and is, therefore, a home rule unit under subsection (a) of Section 6 of Article VII of the Illinois Constitution of 1970; and

WHEREAS, subject to said Section, a home rule unit may exercise any power and perform any function pertaining to its government and affairs for the protection of the public health, safety, morals, and welfare; and

WHEREAS, Retired Mayor Thomas J. Weisner's leadership and vision for the City of Aurora are truly exemplified by the restoration of both the natural beauty of the Fox River and the adjoining land that became RiverEdge Park during his tenure; and

WHEREAS, RiverEdge Park is a culmination of Mayor Weisner's environmental, economic development and downtown revitalization efforts and the realization of RiverEdge Park would simply have never happened without these efforts; and

WHEREAS, Mayor Weisner's ardent belief in the arts as an economic engine for the downtown now brings more than 100,000 concert goers to RiverEdge Park annually; and

WHEREAS, the City Council desires to honor Mayor Weisner in his retirement by renaming RiverEdge Park the "Thomas J. Weisner RiverEdge Park" so that future generations of Aurorans can appreciate the accomplishments of Mayor Weisner which have impacted our city both during his tenure and into the future.
