SUBJECT:title
A Traffic Study for the Simms Street and Gates Street intersection for possibility of installing all-way Stop signage. Ward 3, Alderman Mesiacos.
body
PURPOSE:
To determine the possibility of installing all-way Stop signage at the intersection of Simms Street and Gates Street.
BACKGROUND:
A voice request was submitted by a city official and school principal requesting a Traffic Study be performed for the intersection of Simms Street and Gates Street. Subsequently, PS# 2403505 was submitted.
DISCUSSION:
Based on the traffic study, neither the traffic volumes nor crash history warrant the installation of an all-way stop. Traffic volumes on the westbound approach are about 300 veh/day and the northbound approach at 500 veh/day. The peak hour only once exceeding a measured 100 veh/hr, on the northbound approach. The Manual of Uniform Traffic Control recommends approximately five times the shown peak hour volume before consideration of an all-way stop. Coupled with adjacent stop controlled intersection to the west, an all-way stop is not warranted.
To clarify right of way staff recommends two stop signs for both the eastbound and westbound approach.
IMPACT STATEMENT:
No impact based on staff recommendation.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Staff recommends two stop signs for both the eastbound and westbound approach with cross traffic does not stop placards.
