PURPOSE:
The purpose of this event is to distribute school supplies to income qualified families.  Medical, dental and social service information is also provided. A mobile food pantry will be on site as well.
 
BACKGROUND:
Communities in Schools, the sponsoring organization has held this event at the
First Presbyterian Church Harkness Center for the past 20 years. Approximately 100
volunteers manage the event which draws participation from more than 30 social service agencies. The Back to School Fair provides school supplies to approximately 3,000 children, including immunizations, school physicals and dental screenings.  Parents are provided information on social services. The event is scheduled from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.
 
DISCUSSION:
There are no direct City costs associated with the event.
 
IMPACT STATEMENT:
Support from the following departments/divisions is requested: Two (2) class III and two (2) standard barricades with No Thru Traffic signs at both ends of the street (Downer and Benton) from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.  
Traffic will be routed in to the church parking lot from Downer, and would exit out on to Benton.
Organizers are contacting APD for additional traffic control measures.
 
RECOMMENDATIONS:
I request the proposed event be approved and forwarded to the Government Operations Committee.
