SUBJECT:title

A Traffic Study for Deerpath Road by the Herget Middle School.  Ward 5, Alderman Franco.

body

PURPOSE:

A Traffic Study for 1550 Deerpath Road by the Herget Middle School (SD129) to determine if the installation of guardrail is warranted on the western side of Deerpath.

BACKGROUND:

An E-mail was received requesting that guardrail be installed on the western side Deerpath Road at the curve in front of Herget Middle School.  Concern was expressed for vehicles leaving the roadway.

DISCUSSION:

Deerpath Road is posted for 30 mph. The curve is marked with chevrons and "curve ahead" yellow warning signs and the required Advisory Speed Plaque, in this case, 20 mph.  The school zone is also signed by School Area signage (S5-1) with a 20 mph speed limit.

A traffic study revealed guardrail barrier installation is not warranted based on factors of vehicular speed, available clear zone and crash history.

IMPACT STATEMENT:

APD resources for speed limit enforcement, Street Department resources to check existing signage condition and retro-reflectivity, Street Lighting Budget for three ComEd wood pole luminaires.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Staff does not recommend the installation of guardrail barrier, adjacent to the west side of Deerpath Road.  Staff recommends random, selective speed enforcement targeting school arrival and dismissal time periods. Street Department will be check sign quality and retroreflectivity of the existing signage, along Deerpath Road. Public Works will arrange for the installation of street lighting to be placed on three Comed wood poles near the curve, on the west side of Deerpath Road, adjacent to the school.
