SUBJECT: Title
Certificate of Appropriateness to move the “Blues Mural” from 6 E. Downer Place to the north elevation of 33 S. Broadway (COA Public Art Commission - 19-0740 / AU22/3-19.129-FCOA - JM - Ward 2)
Body
PURPOSE:
The City of Aurora Public Art Commission is requesting to move the “Blues Mural” from 6 E. Downer Place to the north elevation of 33 S. Broadway.
BACKGROUND:
The Public Art Commission is proposing to relocate the “Blues Mural” from the existing building due to the new mural being proposed on the Silver Plate Building. The mural will be placed on the second story of 33 S. Broadway to allow it to be visible while also not being easily accessible to vandalism or theft. The mural will be partially visible from the newly renovated Mundy Park.
DISCUSSION:
The mural is being located on a blank wall containing no architectural features and will be attached to the building so it will not impact the existing brick. The mural has been reviewed by the City Public Art Director and approved by the Aurora Public Art Commission at their August 19, 2019 meeting. This recommendation goes to the FoxWalk Design Review Committee for recommendation, and finally to the Building, Zoning, and Economic Development Committee for a final decision.
POLICIES AND GUIDELINES:
The recommendation is based on Section 8.4 "Murals" of the FoxWalk Overlay District
Design Guidelines adopted on June 28, 2016.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
The Design Review Committee recommended APPROVAL of a Certificate of Appropriateness to install a mural on the south elevation facing the river at 36 W. Downer Place.
