SUBJECT:title
A Traffic Study for the Elmwood Drive and Plum Street intersection for the installation of Pedestrian Crossing Signage.  Ward 4, Alderman Donnell  .
body
PURPOSE:
To determine the viability of installing Pedestrian Crosswalk signage and refreshing painted crosswalks when weather turns suitable.

BACKGROUND:
A resident submitted ACR 86263 expressing concern about careless drivers not paying attention to the presence of school children.  The resident suggests that installing Pedestrian Crossing signage would cure this problem.  .

DISCUSSION:
The intersection of Elmwood Drive and Plum Street has 4-Way STOP signage.  To the South and North, Elmwood Drive is No-Parking-This-Side on the West side.   Plum Street is No Parking on the North side.  Elmwood Drive has a dashed yellow center line, while Plum Street has a double yellow center line.  Children travel to and from three schools, each within two blocks of the intersection.   While staff believes the installation of additional signage will have little to no impact given the intersection is already an all way stop, There should be some benefit to upgrading the existing crosswalks to the school crossing crosswalks.  This will provide enhanced visibility.

IMPACT STATEMENT:
Funding would be required by Operations for the repainting and upgrading of the cross walks.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
Staff recommends repainting and upgrading of the cross walks to the school crosswalk standard as weather permits.
