Sponsors: Public Works

SUBJECT: title
A Traffic Study requesting  NO PARKING DURING SCHOOL HOURS on the south side of the street 6th Avenue between Gates Avenue and S. Union Street. Ward 3, Alderman Mesiacos
body
PURPOSE:
To investigate the appropriateness of restricting parking on 6th Avenue due to traffic congestion associated with school traffic

BACKGROUND:
A request was received from a resident of an adjacent roadway expressing concern with ”busy traffic and crowded street conditions” on Sixth avenue.  The request to restrict parking states that high school students are parking there while parents are picking up children from Gates School.   Parking is not restricted in the area, although along the south side of Sixth Avenue there are signs NO STUDENT LOADING THIS SIDE OF STREET.   Also there is a 20 mph School Zone Speed sign.

DISCUSSION:
While generally this request would be approved due to the width of the roadway in this area, the request was not received by a resident of this section of 6th Avenue.  There has not been a crash history in this area nor any known pedestrian accidents that staff is aware off.

Residents of this section of 6th have not requested parking restriction and do allow vehicles to pull off the paved area.   While the recommendation would be reconsidered if a resident of this street would request the restrictions; since there has been no such request, the recommendation will be denial.  This is consistent with past practice of the Committee.

IMPACT STATEMENT:
Based on staff recommendation no impact.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
Staff recommends denial.
