A Traffic Study for the S. Farnsworth Avenue and Summerlin Drive intersection. Ward 9, Alderman Bugg.
body
PURPOSE:
A Traffic Study for the S. Farnsworth Avenue and Summerlin Drive intersection, to determine solutions for alerting motorists not to block Summerlin Drive during peak periods.
BACKGROUND:
A resident submitted an E-mail (10/16/2017) requesting Do Not Block Intersection signage for the S. Farnsworth Avenue and Summerlin Drive intersection. There are reports of northbound traffic on S. Farnsworth Avenue approaching Ogden Avenue being backed up to Hafenrichter Road during the weekday AM peak traffic hour.
DISCUSSION:
S. Farnsworth Avenue is classified as an Arterial roadway, with a 35 mph speed limit. Summerlin Drive is classified as a Minor Collector, with a 25 mph speed limit. S. Farnsworth Avenue is a four-lane roadway, while eastbound Summerlin Drive is about 22' wide approaching Farnsworth. Both roadways have curb and gutter.
The traffic signal on Ogden Avenue is approximately 400 feet from the Farnsworth and Summerlin intersection. During the weekday AM rush period, both lanes of northbound Farnsworth traffic queue back beyond the Summerlin intersection. The traffic queue spillback blocks the intersection of Farnsworth Avenue and Summerlin Drive, hindering eastbound Summerlin Drive motorist entrance to northbound Farnsworth Avenue.
IMPACT STATEMENT:
Street Department resources for installing and maintaining signage.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Staff recommends installing DO NOT BLOCK INTERSECTION signage on northbound Farnsworth near the intersection with Summerlin Drive.
