SUBJECT:title
A Traffic Study for the New Haven Avenue and Sheldon Avenue intersection.
Ward 6, Alderman Saville
body
PURPOSE:
To determine the need for Traffic Calming at the intersection of New Haven Avenue and Sheldon Avenue.
BACKGROUND:
A Resident submitted an E-mail to Alderman Saville expressing concern over speed and crashes
DISCUSSION:
The existing intersection has YIELD control for the east west movement only. Each approach is approximately 33-feet in width. There is a crosswalk on all four approaches.
A Traffic Speed/Count Study revealed an ADT of about 450 vpd. The combine north and south bound speeds are Mean: 26 to 26 mph, Median: 26 mph, and 85th% of 30 to 32 mph.
There were a total of three reported crashes at this intersection over the last three years.
Based on volume traffic calming is not warranted. The current crash rate would not be improved by installation of traffic calming or an all way stop.
IMPACT STATEMENT:
Traffic Study is approved.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Staff recommends replacing existing YIELD signs with STOP signs and CROSS TRAFFIC DOES NOT STOP placards.
