SUBJECT:
A Resolution Authorizing Well Maintenance Services for Well Nos. 17 and 103 for the Water Production Division

PURPOSE:
To obtain City Council authorization for Layne Christensen Company (Layne), 721 W. Illinois Ave, Aurora, IL, to perform all necessary field services, inspections, and testing to evaluate and rehabilitate the subject wells as applicable.

BACKGROUND:
Well No. 17, located at 811 N. Highland Avenue is a deep well with the pump and motor setting at 840 feet below the surface and is normally capable of supplying approximately 1,100,000 gallons of water per day. Well 17 has been recently inactive due to loss of pumping capacity attributed to possible holes in the column pipe and/or bowl assembly. The proposed Phase I work performed by Layne will involve the removal of the pump components which is required in order to verify the actual cause of the suspected problem(s). Additionally, routine inspections of all pump, motor, and piping components are provided with the initial Phase I work. Final repair recommendations and cost estimates will be considered after the initial removal and inspections are completed.

Well No. 103, located at 501 Orchard Road is a shallow well with the pump and motor setting at 76 feet below the surface and is normally capable of supplying approximately 700,000 gallons of water per day. Shallow wells located in typical sand & gravel formations may lose pumping capacity over time due to plugging of the well screen from silt or other solids found in shallow groundwater. When loss of pumping capacity becomes excessive, the well screen typically requires maintenance cleaning. Layne is proposing to clean the well screen using a combination of chemical treatment and the Sonar Jet treatment processes. Furthermore, as the pump components must be removed to facilitate cleaning, ...
