TO: Mayor Richard C. Irvin and City Council
FROM: Deborah Lang, Assistant Corporation Counsel, Sgt. Woods, Aurora Police Department
DATE: May 16, 2019
SUBJECT:
The City of Aurora, through the Aurora Police Department, is requesting approval of this Resolution which contains an agreement between Indian Prairie Community Unit School District 204 (District 204) and Aurora Police Department concerning the Crossing Guard Program at District 204.
PURPOSE:
This agreement transfers the responsibility of school crossing guards from the City of Aurora, through the Aurora Police Department, to District 204.
BACKGROUND:
The Aurora Police Department reviewed the use of City crossing guards throughout the City of Aurora and observed that often there are numerous volunteers, parents, and staff assisting children at school crossing locations.
DISCUSSION:
The Agreement will allow for the Aurora Police Department to continue to train District 204 staff or volunteers on the responsibilities of school crossing guards. In exchange, District 204 will manage the crossing guard program. In addition, the City of Aurora will transfer possession of the school crossing guard shacks to District 204.
IMPACT STATEMENT:
By transferring the school crossing program over to District 204, the Aurora Police Department will be able to focus on patrol duties and assisting in active investigation instead of assisting crossing guards and assisting in maintenance of the crossing guard shacks.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
The Aurora Police Department requests that the Government Operations Committee approve this resolution and forward it to the Committee of the Whole.
