SUBJECT:title
A Traffic Study for the Ashland Avenue and Lafayette Street intersection. Ward 4, Alderman Donnell.
body
PURPOSE:
To determine the warrants for changing the Ashland Avenue and Lafayette Street intersection STOP signage from two-way to four-way.
BACKGROUND:
A Resident submitted ACR Case ID 109287 requesting a 4-Way STOP at the above intersection.
DISCUSSION:
Lafayette Street is a Residential roadway, with a Speed Limit of 25 mph. It has a standard roadway width of 29.5-ft. A Traffic Study revealed substantial traffic volumes on Ashland Avenue, but very light traffic volumes on Lafayette Street, less than 300 ADT. This request does not meet the minimum guidelines set forth by the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
The two closest 4-Way STOP intersections on Ashland are at Fifth Street to the east, and Douglas Avenue to the west. A more logical choice for a 4-Way STOP would be at the intersection of 4th Street, which is also midway between the other 4-Way STOPs. Also, Fourth Street has a consistent ADT of about 1,400 vpd, compared with the Lafayette Street ADT of only about 300 vpd. However, staff is not recommending any additional all way stops at this time.
IMPACT STATEMENT:
No action.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Staff recommends denial.
