SUBJECT:title

Requesting approval to stage the City of Aurora's Winter Lights event downtown on Friday, November 17, 2017 from 5:00 to 9:00 pm.

body

PURPOSE:

Winter Lights is Aurora's official kick-off of the holiday season. The City's holiday tree is lit by the Mayor, Miss Merry Christmas and Mr. Jack Frost.

BACKGROUND:

The event includes a parade, tree lighting, visits with Santa, live reindeer, food trucks and pop-up shops, concluding with a fireworks display along the Fox River.

Downtown businesses are asked to stay open longer to take advantage of the increased foot traffic.

DISCUSSION:

Due to traffic issues the parade will stage on Middle Avenue, enter onto Downer and end at Water Street.  This will alleviate any issues with Broadway, New York Street and Galena as in previous years.

The event is budgeted out of Special Events account number 101-1341-450.53-07.

IMPACT STATEMENT:

Assistance from the following Departments and Divisions:

APD, AFD, Fire Prevention, Mayor's Office of Communications, HR, Revenue and Collections, Equipment Services, Property Standards, Streets, Sign Shop, Downtown Maintenance, Water & Sewer, Electrical and MVPS.
A detailed City Services Request is included as an attachment.  It will be sent to all affected Departments and Divisions and may be revised as necessary.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

I request the proposed event be forwarded to the Government Operations Committee for review and approval.
