Athziry Dia de Muertos is requesting permission to stage Day of the Dead on Benton between Stolp Avenue and River Street on Sunday, November 6, 2016 from 1:00 to 5:00 pm.

PURPOSE:
Day of the Dead is a celebration of Mexican culture through visual arts and performance. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died and help support their spiritual journey.
BACKGROUND:
This is the 7th year the event has been held in Aurora. The organizers are partnering with SciTech and staging the event on Benton directly in front of the museum. Performers include Ballet Folklórico, Aztec Dancers, Simply Destinee and others. Several food and merchandise vendors are also expected to participate. Anticipated attendance throughout the day is 500.
DISCUSSION:
There are no direct City costs associated with this event. Insurance is covered by the City through the Neighborhood Festival Funding Grant program.
IMPACT STATEMENT:
City services requested are:
Street Department: 1 class III and 2 class 1 barricades at River and Benton
1 class III and 4 class 1 barricades at Stolp and Benton
The class III barricades to have "Road Closed" signage affixed.
All barricades to be dropped off on Friday, November 4 and picked up on Monday, November 7.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
I request the proposed event be forwarded to the Government Operations Committee for review and approval.
