SUBJECT: Title
Certificate of Appropriateness to install a mural on the wall facing the pedestrian alleyway at 11 N. Broadway (COA Public Art - 19-0735 / AU22/3-19.125-FCOA - JM - Ward 2)
Body
PURPOSE:
The contractor on behalf of the owner is requesting a Certificate of Appropriateness to paint a mural on the wall facing the pedestrian alleyway at 11 N. Broadway.
BACKGROUND:
The applicant is proposing to repaint the already painted brick wall and to permit a mural artist to paint an abstract mural on the portion of the wall closer towards the Broadway access to the alleyway. The mural will be an abstract painting featuring symbols associated with games in various bright colors.
DISCUSSION:
There are plans to make this pedestrian alleyway more visibly appealing, including removing the aluminum panels over the entrances, cleaning up utilities, and adding lighting. The mural is another way to brighten up the alleyway and make it more attractive.
The mural has been reviewed by the City Public Art Director and approved by the Aurora Public Art Commission at their August 19, 2019 meeting. This recommendation goes to the FoxWalk Design Review Committee for recommendation, and finally to the Building, Zoning, and Economic Development Committee for a final decision.
POLICIES AND GUIDELINES:
The recommendation is based on Section 8.4 "Murals" of the FoxWalk Overlay District
Design Guidelines adopted on June 28, 2016.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
The Design Review Committee recommended APPROVAL of a Certificate of Appropriateness to install a mural on the wall facing the pedestrian alleyway at 11 N. Broadway.
