A Traffic Study for the Middlebury Drive and Grayhawk Ct/Dr intersection. Ward 9, Alderman Bugg.
body
PURPOSE:
A Traffic Study for the Middlebury Drive and Grayhawk Ct/Dr intersection to determine traffic calming options.

BACKGROUND:
A Resident submitted ACR Case ID 130512 expressing concern about possible speeding on Middlebury Drive through the Grayhawk Ct/Dr intersection.

DISCUSSION:
Both roadways are classified as residential and have speed limits of 25 mph. All have curb and gutters, as well as sidewalks all around. The west side of Middlebury has a 10-ft wide bicycle lane instead of a sidewalk. There is 2-way STOP signage, with Grayhawk having to stop. Middlebury operates as a neighborhood collector in this area.

Middlebury Drive and Grayhawk Court have the standard width of 29.5-ft. Grayhawk Drive has a median with grass, curb, and trees. Travelling about 280-ft. south on Middlebury Drive from the intersection, there is a mild curve. Travelling only 40-ft. north on Middlebury Drive from the intersection, there is a sharper curve to the left with only about 320-ft. radius of curvature. While these curves provide traffic calming, the northern curve may create line of sight or visibility issues Middlebury was found to have an ADT of 1,300 vpd. Mean speed was 28 mph, while the 85th percentile speed was 32 mph, and the median speed was 28 mph.

MUTCD guidelines were not met for installation of an all way stop. However, staff will continue to monitor crash history for a potential warrant trigger.

While speeds were slightly higher than staff would like to see, they are in line with expectations on residential collectors. Since the request was for an all way stop staff will be recommending denial.

IMPACT STATEMENT:
No impact.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
Staff recommends denial.
