body

PURPOSE:

Day of the Dead is a celebration of Mexican culture through visual arts and performance.  The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died and help support their spiritual journey.

BACKGROUND:

This is the 9th year the event has been held in Aurora.  The organizers are partnering with SciTech and Aurora Downtown First Fridays. Anticipated attendance is approximately 600 throughout the length of the event.

DISCUSSION:

Organizers are asking for Benton to be closed from River to Stolp beginning at 4:00 pm for set up.  At this time there are no Paramount shows scheduled for that evening.  Performers include Ballet Folklórico, Aztec Dancers, Mariachi as well as several food and merchandise vendors.

A COI is being provided by the City through a NFF Grant.

IMPACT STATEMENT:

City services are requested from the Street Department for the following:

1 class III and 2 Class I barricades at the corner of River and Benton, and Stolp and Benton.  Class III barricades to have "Road Closed" signage affixed.  Drop off Friday, November 2 and pick up Monday the 5th.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

I request the proposed event be forwarded to the Government Operations committee for review.
