TO: Mayor John Laesch
FROM: Christopher Linville, Superintendent of Fleet Operations
DATE: August 12, 2025
SUBJECT:
A Resolution authorizing the sale of obsolete and surplus property using JJ Kane Auctioneers and Purple Wave Inc.
PURPOSE:
To sell surplus vehicles and equipment equitably and efficiently through public auction.
BACKGROUND:
The City of Aurora has sold surplus vehicles and equipment through public auctions for more than twenty years.
In 2025, following trade-ins and salvages, the City will have several used surplus vehicles and equipment remaining to sell (projected list attached). Prior to sale, the Fleet Maintenance Division removes all reusable equipment, City decals, license plates, insurance cards, and any other identification. Police vehicles are restored to a monochromatic paint scheme, and all law enforcement lighting and equipment are removed. Some of the operable vehicles will be retained until later in the year to supplement vehicular needs for City divisions that employ seasonal staff.
DISCUSSION:
The Fleet Maintenance Division requests to utilize both JJ Kane Auctioneers and Purple Wave Inc. to sell the City's surplus vehicles and equipment. Both auctions are open to the public and conducted via internet (seller agreements attached).
Proceeds from the sale of vehicles and equipment will be recorded as revenue in account 101-0000-392.01-00.
IMPACT STATEMENT:
N/A
RECOMMENDATIONS:
I recommend that the City Council adopts a resolution authorizing the sale of the City's obsolete and surplus property using JJ Kane Auctioneers and Purple Wave Inc.
