Requesting approval to stage the three City of Aurora Farmers Markets to be held throughout the summer and fall of 2016.

PURPOSE:

The purpose of the markets is to allow citizens to have convenient access to affordable, locally produced, healthful, farm-fresh food and the opportunity to develop fact-to-face relationships between residents and the area farmers and artisans.

 

BACKGROUND:

The Aurora Farmers Market is in its 104th year of continuous operation.  The market was designated as the oldest continuously operating Farmers Market in the State of Illinois by Governor Quinn in 2012 during its centennial year.

 

DISCUSSION:

Expenditures for the market are appropriated in the Special Events budget, account number 101-1341-450.53-09.  All grant expenditures go through account number 101-1341-450.53-36.

The downtown Saturday market will be held at the Aurora Transportation Center, 233 N. Broadway, June 11 through October 15 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. with a preview date of May 14. AFM west will be held at West Aurora Plaza, 1901 W. Galena, Wednesdays July 13 through September 28 from 12:00 to 5:00 pm. and the east market will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic, 701 S. Eola Road, Thursdays July 14 through August 25 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.  

 

IMPACT STATEMENT:

Assistance from the following departments/divisions is requested: Fire Prevention, Downtown Maintenance, Electrical, MVPS, Public Information, Water & Sewer, Streets and Youth & Senior Services. A detailed listing of requested services is attached.

 

RECOMMENDATIONS:

 I request the proposed event be forwarded to the Government Operations Committee for review and approval.
