SUBJECT: title
A Traffic Study for the installation of Pedestrian Crossing signage for the Pedestrian Crossing across Liberty St. at Commerce Dr. Ward 10, Alderman Johnson
body
PURPOSE:
To enhance the visibility of the existing pedestrian crossing at Liberty Street and Commerce Street.
BACKGROUND:
A request was submitted by the Safety Manager of Optimum Nutrition facilities requesting assistance for their employees crossing Liberty Street between their two buildings/parking. The intersection of Liberty Street and Commerce Drive does not warrant a traffic signal, although it does have marked Pedestrian Crossings in all directions. The western crosswalk across Liberty has been upgraded from simply two six-inch guide markings to 12-inch solid bars as well. There is a two-way STOP on Commerce Drive approaching Liberty Street.
DISCUSSION:
There is a consistent pedestrian crossing volume at this location. Traffic speeds on Liberty approach an 85th % speed of 39 MPH in this area. Several options were discussed including installation of an additional pedestrian crossing sign in the median to the RRFB pedestrian activated beacons. Additional signage is recommended based on Ward fund prioritization and funding availability.
IMPACT STATEMENT:
Operations will be required to provide and install signage.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Staff recommends interim approval of an additional pedestrian crossing sign in each median approach.
