SUBJECT:
Resolution Authorizing the Sale of Obsolete and Surplus Vehicles and Equipment
PURPOSE:
To effectively and efficiently sell various vehicles and equipment through the use of two auction companies.
BACKGROUND:
The City of Aurora has disposed of City vehicles and equipment in public auctions for more than twenty years. Equipment Services strips every vehicle of any City decals, insurance cards or other identification. The Police squad cars are stripped of the decals, emergency lighting, Ford Interceptor badge, spot lights and all other police related equipment. Police vehicles are painted black before sending to auction.
DISCUSSION:
This year, the City will have approximately 40 vehicles to sell. Many of the sedans and pickups that are being replaced will not be auction until later this year so that divisions with Seasonal staff have vehicles for their use.
JJ Kane and America's Auto Auction are the two auction companies that Aurora has used in the past. Both auctions are live on the internet so that they can reach a large audence. JJ Kane has been used for many years. Their auctions are held quarterly at the Beloit, WI location. JJ Kane does not charge the seller any fees other than the hiking (transportation charge) of the vehicle to their auction yard. America's Auto Auction was first used last year. This auction is held monthly at their Crestwood, IL yard. America's Auction does charge a seller fee of 10% of the gross selling price as well as a hiking fee.
IMPACT STATEMENT:
There is no impact to other City Divisions
The proceeds from the sale of vehicles are recorded as revenue in account 101-0000-392.01-00
RECOMMENDATIONS:
I recommend that the City Council adopts a resolution authorizing the sale of City of Aurora's obsolete and surplus property.
