SUBJECT: title
A Traffic Study Request for Consideration of a Street Closure of Squire Drive on East End to prevent cut-through traffic, except for emergency vehicles - Alderman Schuler, Ward 1
body
PURPOSE:
Traffic Study to review possible Street Closure of Squire Drive near Richards Avenue to prevent cut-through traffic except for emergency vehicles.

BACKGROUND:
A resident of Squire Drive contacted Alderman Schuler expressing concern over cut-through traffic.  The resident specifically requested that the east end at Richards Avenue be closed to all traffic except emergency vehicles.

DISCUSSION:
A traffic study was conducted August 26 thru August 29.  The study indicates an Average daily traffic of 570 vehicles per day with an average speed of 25 MPH and an 85th % speed of 31 MPH.   There appeared to be a minor spike of 20 additional vehicles in the eastbound traffic associated with school drop off.  This could be considered cut thru traffic.   There was a lesser spike of approximately 10 vehicles associated with the PM school pickup.   Given the relatively low volume of cut thru traffic and the associated cost, issues associated with emergency vehicle response and inconvenience to other area residents,  Staff does not support this request.

IMPACT STATEMENT:
Based on staff recommendation no impact.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
Staff recommends denial.
