SUBJECT:title

A Traffic Study for Parker Avenue and Lafayette Street.  Ward 4, Alderman Donnell.

body

PURPOSE:

A Traffic Study for Parker Avenue and Lafayette Street, to determine if a change in traffic control, for the intersection, is necessary.

BACKGROUND:

Alderman Garza submitted PS #4610369, requesting two-way stop control for the intersection.

DISCUSSION:

Lafayette Street is classified as a residential roadway, 22 feet in width, with a 25 mph speed limit.  Parker Avenue is classified as a minor collector, 26 feet in width, with a 25 mph speed limit.  There is no traffic control signage at the intersection, currently. There is an existing street light on the southeast corner.  Lafayette Street dead ends south of the intersection and serves two single family homes and small apartment structure. The northwest quadrant of the intersection borders Lebanon Park.  Lafayette Street has light traffic volumes and crash history reflects one crash in the last 3 years.  Light pedestrian activity was observed, parallel to Parker Avenue, although there is no existing continuous sidewalk. Although the intersection is operating well with no signed traffic control, we are not adverse to the placement of signage, for two-way stop control, due to the adjacent park and being this is the only intersection bordering Lebanon Park without traffic control signage.

IMPACT STATEMENT:

Street Department resources.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Staff recommends installation of stop signs for the Lafayette Street approaches and stop bar pavement markings.
