TO: Mayor John Laesch
FROM: Deborah Lang, Assistant Corporation Counsel
DATE: July 28, 2026
SUBJECT:
An ordinance amending Chapter 42, Section 22 of the Code of Ordinances, City of Aurora, Illinois regarding mailboxes.
PURPOSE:
This proposed amendment seeks to update the City's Ordinance to update the City's process for providing reimbursement for mailbox damage caused by a city plow or city contracted plows.
BACKGROUND:
This section was last updated in 2019. Since that time period, inflation on building materials has increased and $100 reimbursement should cover the cost of labor and installation of a basic mailbox.
DISCUSSION:
This proposed amendment would increase the reimbursement from seventy-five dollars ($75.00) to one-hundred dollars ($100.00) for mailboxes damaged by city snowplows or city-contracted snow removal.
IMPACT STATEMENT:
The proposed amendment would benefit the residents by increasing the amount of reimbursement for the replacement of a mailbox to adjust to inflation that has taken place post Covid.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
We request the proposed ordinance be enacted.
