SUBJECT:
A resolution to accept a bid from Superior Excavating Company, PO Box 575, Channahon, IL 60447 for the 2 N. Broadway (Ward 2) Vault Filling Project in the amount of $204,290.00.

PURPOSE:
To accept the bid for the above referenced project.

BACKGROUND:
City crews have made several repairs to the sidewalk adjacent to 2 N. Broadway. Recently the City coordinated with the real estate company selling the property to perform an inspection of the vault beneath the sidewalk and the infrastructure contained within. Upon inspection, the structural steel supporting the west end of the vault ceilings (sidewalks) was found to be deteriorated to a point of being structurally unsafe.

The City Engineering Department quickly prepared plans and specifications to remove the sidewalk and infill those portions of the vault not found to contain deteriorated structural steel as well as two alternate repair scopes to address the west end. Alternate A included repair and replacement of the failing structural steel, which would allow for the west portion of the vault, and utilities currently located within, to remain as is. Alternate B, which is the City's preference to minimize future maintenance and safety issues, included infilling of the west vault section and providing new stub outs/conduit access to the utilities formerly contained in the west vault section. Both alternates included replacement of the sidewalks.

A few days after the request for bids on this project was published, the City was made aware of two additional small vaults located under the sidewalk adjacent to 82 S. LaSalle Street (also Ward 2). The City would like to infill these small vaults to facilitate the safe reconstruction of the adjacent sidewalk to improve safety and ADA (American's with Disabilities Act) compliance.
