A Traffic Study for George Avenue and State Street, Ward 3, Alderman Mesiacos.
body
PURPOSE:
A Traffic Study for George Avenue and State Street, to determine if a change in traffic control for the intersection is necessary.
BACKGROUND:
Alderman Mesiacos submitted email/voicemail request for a traffic study, at the subject intersection, to determine if the current yield sign control, for the George Avenue approaches should be changed to stop sign control.
DISCUSSION:
George Avenue and State Street are classified as residential roadways, 30 feet in width, with a 25 mph speed limit. Existing intersection traffic control are yield signs for the George Avenue approaches, to State Street. The intersection has crosswalks on all legs and a street light on the southeast corner. George Avenue is approximately 2000 feet in length, running between Union and Smith. State Street ends a block south of George Avenue. An all-way stop is not warranted based on existing intersection traffic volumes and crash data, per the criteria in the Manual On Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
IMPACT STATEMENT:
Street Department resources.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Staff recommends replacing the existing yield signs with stop signs, along with stop bar pavement markings, for the George Avenue approaches.
