SUBJECT:

A resolution appointing Jose Cervantes to the Aurora Veterans Advisory Council.

 

DISCUSSION:

The Aurora Veterans Council (AVAC) was re-established in 2012. The fifteen (15) member council is made up of residents who are: members in good standing of a Veteran's organization headquartered or historically active within the community, Veterans honorably discharged and immediate family members of a Veteran, deceased or living. The AVAC is tasked with assisting in any Veteran-related special events and activities, serving as a liaison between Veterans, Veteran's organizations, the Mayor, the City Council and the community as well as aiding in the solicitation of special events, activities, programs and/or funding related to Veterans.

 

There are currently vacancies on the board.  

 

RECOMMENDATION:

It is recommended the City Council approve the appointment of Jose Cervantes to the Aurora Veterans Advisory Council.

WHEREAS, the City of Aurora has a population of more than 25,000 persons and is, therefore, a home rule unit under subsection (a) of Section 6 of Article VII of the Illinois Constitution of 1970; and

 

WHEREAS, subject to said Section, a home rule unit may exercise any power and perform any function pertaining to its government and affairs for the protection of the public health, safety, morals, and welfare; and

 

WHEREAS, vacancies currently exist on the Aurora Veterans Advisory Council; and

 

WHEREAS, it is the Mayor's desire that the recommended candidate be appointed to said Council.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Aurora, Illinois, hereby approve the appointment of Jose Cervantes, Aurora, IL, to the Aurora Veterans Advisory Council.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the term of Jose Cervantes shall expire October 23, 2022, however, in any event, he shall continue to serve until reappointed or his respective replacement is approved by the Council.
