SUBJECT:

The Aurora Police Department is requesting an approval of this resolution to allow them to accept a donation from First Student of a school bus.

 

PURPOSE:

This resolution would allow the Aurora Police Department, through the Police Chief or her designee, to accept a donation of a school bus by First Student and complete the appropriate paperwork to accept the donation.

 

BACKGROUND:

Occasionally, the Aurora Police Department rents school buses to send officers to tactical training. In doing so recently, First Student offered to donate a working used school bus to the Aurora Police Department.

 

DISCUSSION:

First Student is requesting a letter from the Aurora Police Department stating that they would accept their donation of the used school bus. First Student may need additional paperwork completed by the Aurora Police Department to complete the donation.  By having the resolution, it will allow the Police Chief or her designee, to complete any additional paperwork that would facilitate the transfer of the school bus from Frist Student to the Aurora Police Department. The school bus would be used to take officers to trainings and used for other law enforcement needs.

 

IMPACT STATEMENT:

The school bus will be donated by First Student and the Aurora Police Department will not have to pay for the bus.  There will be minimal cost to transfer the title and plates to the City of Aurora. 

 

RECOMMENDATIONS:

The Aurora Police Department is requesting that the Committee of the Whole approve the resolution and allow the Chief of Police or her designee to complete the appropriate paperwork to accept the school bus from First Student.

WHEREAS, the City of Aurora has a population of more than 25,000 persons and is, therefore, a home rule unit under subsection (a) of Section 6 of Article VII of the Illinois Constitution of 1970; and

 

WHEREAS, subject to said Section, a home rule unit may exercise any power and perform any function pertaining to its government and affairs for the protection of the public health, safety, morals, and welfare; and

 

WHEREAS, the Aurora Police Department will use the donated bus to send officers to trainings and other law enforcement purposes;

 

WHEREAS, no goods or services were provided in exchange for said donation; and

 

WHEREAS, the donation has been made to assist the Aurora Police Department to assist in their training; and)

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Aurora, Illinois, as follows: that the Chief of the Aurora Police Department, shall be and hereby is authorized in person or through her designee, to take all actions necessary on behalf of the City to accept the donated school bus, and to use such bus for the purposes set forth in this Resolution.
