PURPOSE:
Community Services is requesting permission to conduct the Winter Lights and Holiday Walk, Friday, November 22, 2013 from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm in Downtown Aurora.
 
BACKGROUND:
This is the second year the city has celebrated Winter Lights event combined with the city tree lighting ceremony and the arrival of Santa Claus.
 
DISCUSSION:
The Winter Lights and Holiday Walk includes the arrival of Santa Claus with the lighting of the holiday tree at North Island Center, holiday carolers at the Millennium gazebo and steps of the GAR Museum, a visit with Santa in the Sculpture Garden with an atmosphere of holiday specialty food vendors on Downer Place in downtown Aurora.
 
This event is budgeted from account 101-1320-450-53.07.  City Services include Police, Downtown Services, Streets, Electrical, and Water & Sewer to set up event.
  • Closure of Downer Place from Water Street to Stolp
  • Temporary closing of Galena during the tree lighting ceremony
  • Limited access on Stolp between Downer and Galena
  • Provide electric in Sculpture Garden, North Island Center, GAR Museum Steps
  • To provide city sound system with engineer at GAR location, and gazebo
  • To decorate the GAR pine tree and North Island with ornaments
  • Use of Millennium Park Gazebo for carolers and popcorn/ Cider vendor
  • Street Department will place barricades at the following intersections: Downer & Water and Stolp & Downer
  • DTS to provide sand for luminaries, chairs, tables and tent(s) in front of Art & History Center
  • DTS to provide placement of holiday arches (2) and snowflakes (2)
  • Funds are not available in the account and will be transferred from other funds
 
IMPACT STATEMENT:
The impact of this event is a positive contribution to quality of life for the community and promotes the approaching holiday season.
 
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Approval of request.
