WHEREAS, the City of Aurora has a population of more than 25,000 persons and is, therefore, a home rule unit under subsection (a) of Section 6 of Article VII of the Illinois Constitution of 1970; and
WHEREAS, subject to said Section, a home rule unit may exercise any power and perform any function pertaining to its government and affairs for the protection of the public health, safety, morals, and welfare; and
WHEREAS, Robert J. O’Connor, has served as Mayor of the City of Aurora from November 1, 2016 - May 9, 2017; and
WHEREAS, the City of Aurora has benefitted because of your unprecedented willingness to step up and lead as Mayor; and
WHEREAS, although the time you served as Mayor was not very long, the Quality of Service you gave made a huge difference in the lives of many; and
WHEREAS, your Great Leadership is spoken of in circles from the highest office to the smallest child; and
WHEREAS, your Sense of Humor coupled with Humility is an Inspiration to others; and
WHEREAS, your Contributions, Achievements and Commitment will always stand as a pillar in the City of Lights; and
WHEREAS, you possess a rare combination of Vision, Fairness and Understanding - ALL crucial qualities as a Leader; and
WHEREAS, you handled every situation with a positive attitude all while maintaining order; and
WHEREAS, your Dedication and Commitment could be seen in the months, weeks, days and hours you and your wife, Mary, spent appearing throughout the community. Thank you for your service to the City of Aurora.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Aurora, Illinois, that Robert J. O’Connor has served honorably as Mayor of the City of Aurora for the past six months and leaves a legacy of an excellent example. In the words of Abraham Lincoln “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power.”
