TO:                     Aurora City Council

FROM:                     Mayor Thomas J. Weisner

DATE:                     May 18, 2016

SUBJECT:

A Resolution Naming the Aurora Branch Court the "Judge R. Peter Grometer Aurora Branch Court."

BACKGROUND:

The police and court building on East Indian Trail was constructed during Mayor Weisner's first term and completed in late 2009. In addition to a police station with adequate room and modern technologies, the structure includes a court facility - the Aurora Branch court - at the west end.  This allows us to hold court functions locally, saving money in overtime and travel expenses.

Having been in operation for several years, it seems appropriate at this time to name the judicial center. Upon thorough consideration, I could think of no one more deserving or appropriate to honor than retired Judge R. Peter Grometer, a life-long Aurora resident who has served as an elected Circuit Court Judge in our 16th Judicial Circuit of Kane County, as the Chief Judge of that circuit and, from 2001 to 2009, as member of the Illinois Appellate Court.

DISCUSSION:

As reflected in the attached biographical data, Judge Grometer has an impressive record of community service and currently serves on the Aurora Civic Center Authority Board and as a Director of the Juvenile Protective Association.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

It is recommended this Resolution be approved.
