SUBJECT:
A Resolution appointing Dr. Michelle Evans and reappointing Mae Smith, Ryan Maley, Sheila Gray and William Small to the Aurora Human Relations Commission.
DISCUSSION:
The Human Relations Commission (HRC) was established to provide investigative, consultative, cooperative, mediative, educational and promotional and advisory services to the residents of the City of Aurora in furtherance of the legacy of Marie Wilkinson, a lifetime resident of the City of Aurora and pioneer in the realm of social and civil activism who dedicated her life to the fight against poverty, discrimination, hunger, homelessness and injustice in the City of Aurora.
The twelve member commission had expired terms and is currently in need of new members.
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended the City Council approve the appointment and reappointments to the Aurora Human Relations Commission.

WHEREAS, the City of Aurora has a population of more than 25,000 persons and is, therefore, a home rule unit under subsection (a) of Section 6 of Article VII of the Illinois Constitution of 1970; and
WHEREAS, subject to said Section, a home rule unit may exercise any power and perform any function pertaining to its government and affairs for the protection of the public health, safety, morals, and welfare; and
WHEREAS, vacancies and expired terms currently exist on the Human Relations Commission; and
WHEREAS, it is the Mayor's desire that said candidates be appointed and reappointed.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Aurora, Illinois, hereby approve the appointment Dr. Michelle Evans, Aurora, IL and the reappointments of Mae Smith, Aurora, IL, Ryan Maley, Aurora, IL, Sheila Gray, Aurora, IL and William Small, Aurora, IL to the Aurora Human Relations Commission.
NOW BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the terms of Dr. Michelle Evans, Ryan Maley, Sheila Gray, and William Small shall expire on August 1, 2020 and the term of Mae Smith shall expire on August 1, 2019, however, in any event, they shall continue to serve until their respective replacements have been approved by the Council.
