SUBJECT:
A Resolution appointing two new members to the Aurora Human Relations Commission.
PURPOSE:
The purpose of the memo is to appoint two new members to the Aurora Human Relations Commission.
DISCUSSION:
The Human Relations Commission (HRC) was established to provide investigative, consultative, cooperative, mediative, educational and promotional and advisory services to the residents of the City of Aurora in furtherance of the legacy of Marie Wilkinson, a lifetime resident of the City of Aurora and pioneer in the realm of social and civil activism who dedicated her life to the fight against poverty, discrimination, hunger, homelessness and injustice in the City of Aurora.
The twelve member commission currently has vacancies and is in need of new members.
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended the City Council approve the appointments of Susan Sosa Bachmeier and Tony Martinez to the Aurora Human Relations Commission.

WHEREAS, the City of Aurora has a population of more than 25,000 persons and is, therefore, a home rule unit under subsection (a) of Section 6 of Article VII of the Illinois Constitution of 1970; and
WHEREAS, subject to said Section, a home rule unit may exercise any power and perform any function pertaining to its government and affairs for the protection of the public health, safety, morals, and welfare; and
WHEREAS, vacancies currently exist on the Human Relations Commission; and
WHEREAS, it is the Mayor's desire that said candidates be appointed to said commission.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Aurora, Illinois, hereby approve the appointments Susan Sosa Bachmeier, Aurora, IL and Tony Martinez, Aurora, IL to Aurora's Human Relations Commission.
NOW BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the terms of Susan Sosa Bachmeier and Tony Martinez shall expire on August 1, 2018, however, in any event, they shall continue to serve until their respective replacements have been approved by the Council.
