PURPOSE:
To determine the appropriate parking conditions for student pick-up and drop-off on Crane Street between Solfisburg Avenue and Indian Avenue.
BACKGROUND:
An E-mail was submitted expressing concern regarding student pick-up and drop-off on Crane Street between Solfisburg Avenue and Indian Avenue. The resident expressed a concern for student safety
DISCUSSION:
Crane Street was recently resurfacing. The resurfacing included a paving of the shoulder at the request of the same individual requesting restricted parking. This section of Crane Street has become an alternate pickup/drop off area for student who attend C.I. Johnson Elementary School. A grass walk is in place from the dismissal area to Crane Street. The main pickup area is along a very narrow section of Liberty Street that has both higher traffic volumes and deep ditches on each side. To restrict parking on Crane Street would push more vehicles onto a less safe Liberty Street pick up area. We have several document crashes on Liberty Street and staff would emphatically recommend denial of any activity that would place more vehicles for pick up onto Liberty Street. Some vehicles may relocate onto some of the narrow residential streets adjacent to Crane Street. This too is not recommended as most streets are more narrow than crane and are out of the cities jurisdiction. Moving the parking to the residential areas would still force children to cross Crane Street.
All factors considered, the requested restrictions would be an impediment to child/pedestrian safety in this area and is not rescommended.
