PURPOSE:

The City of Aurora Youth & Senior Services Division is requesting approval to hold the annual Aurora Sports Festival to promote May as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month with a focus on healthy sports competition for local middle school students.

BACKGROUND:

This is the 23rd year for this proposed event which involves approximately 1,000 middle school students participating in an Olympic style group of competitive sports and recreational activities held at Phillips Park, East High School, Parkside Lanes, and the Aurora Skate Center.  Opening and closing ceremonies are generally held in the Phillips Park Aquatic Center west parking lot.  The event is done in a cooperative partnership with Aurora Township, Fox Valley Park District, and local schools.

DISCUSSION:

The proposed event is held as planned when weather permits.  If there is inclement weather, other recreational alternatives are offered to schools, such as skating, bowling, Luigi's, and Funway, and it is the school's decision on whether or not they are able to participate.

IMPACT STATEMENT:

City Services are needed from Parks & Recreation (site preparation and return to normal afterwards, use of main & west pavilions, all volleyball pits, 3-4 softball fields, 4-5 basketball courts and transport/return/set up-down of goals, use of Visitor's Center with tables and chairs, golf Commissioner golf course, 8 golf carts and clubhouse for water/freezer storage and ice, post score & thank you boards, amusements area, waste bins, port-a-pots, use of water fountains, use of parking lots), APD (Police Officers for security), AFD (on-site Paramedics and EMA), and Special Events (walkie-talkies).

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Please forward to the Government Operations Committee for approval.
