SUBJECT:
Recommendation to Solicit Bids for Tree Removal at Various Locations Citywide for the Division of Street Maintenance.
PURPOSE:
For efficiency and worker safety, the Street Division has identified approximately 100 dead right of way trees to be contracted for removal over the past several years.
BACKGROUND:
Due to the Emerald Ash Borer, the city has removed thousands of ash trees from the city right of way. We anticipate the bulk of the ash tree removals to be completed by the end of 2015.
DISCUSSION:
By contracting trees 36" and larger in diameter will allow city crews to continue addressing tree removals systematically in subdivisions that have a significant number of ash trees. In addition, many of these trees are near utility lines which require additional care and are time consuming. Also, with the winter shift schedule starting December 1, we will no longer have personnel during daylight hours to staff 3 tree crews daily thru March of 2015. While dollars have not been appropriated for this expenditure in 2014, monies are available in account 340-4460-431-7399.
IMPACT STATEMENT:
We anticipate spending up to $50,000.00 for this work. There will be no impact to other departments or divisions.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Finance committee approval to solicit bids for tree removal, for the division of Street Maintenance.

WHEREAS; The Division of Street Maintenance desires to solicit bids for Tree Removal at Various Locations Citywide in the estimated amount of $50,000.00; and
WHEREAS; Funds are available in account 340-4460-431-7399 for this project.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RECOMMENDED that the Finance Committee of the City of Aurora, Illinois does hereby authorize its Purchasing Director to develop the necessary specifications and invite and advertise for bids to determine cost factors involved for the tree removal at various locations citywide.
