SUBJECT:
An Ordinance Amending Chapter 2, Article II, Division 3 of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Aurora Entitled "Aldermen".
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this proposed change is to update the section of the City Code pertaining Aldermanic onboard/orientation. The language changes will be accompanied by a more robust orientation process for new Aldermen. As in previous years, the orientation process will be a partnership between the Aldermen's Office and the Mayor's Office.
BACKGROUND:
As with many sections of the code, this portion of Chapter 2 has outdate language. The specific changes to the code are minor.
DISCUSSION:
The Aldermanic orientation process is one that has typically been done in one day/session. The upcoming retirement of two current Aldermen reinvigorated the discussion of how we can do a better job of providing information, as well as provide staff more of an opportunity to show Council members what their respective Departments and Divisions do.
IMPACT STATEMENT:
It is anticipated the updated language will have a positive impact on staff's ability to provide information to new City Council members.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully requested this proposed amendment be forwarded to Committee of the Whole for full City Council discussion.

WHEREAS, the City of Aurora has a population of more than 25,000 persons and is, therefore, a home rule unit under subsection (a) of Section 6 of Article VII of the Illinois Constitution of 1970; and
WHEREAS, subject to said Section, a home rule unit may exercise any power and perform any function pertaining to its government and affairs for the protection of the public health, safety, morals, and welfare; and
WHEREAS, this section of the City Code has language that is outdated; and
WHEREAS, this proposed amendment will allow the code to reflect what the past practice has become as it relates to the information provided.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the City Council of the City of Aurora, Illinois, as follows: that Chapter 2, Article II, Division 3 of the City of Aurora Code of Ordinances shall be and is hereby amended as set forth in Exhibit A.
